Trump addresses calls for Biden to drop out of 2024 race

Former President Donald Trump said Biden would remain in the race for president in 2024, despite calls from some members of Biden’s own party for him to step down following his disastrous debate performance late last month.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday, Trump said Biden has an “ego” and “doesn’t want to quit.”

“He’ll probably stay, he has an ego, he doesn’t want to quit. He doesn’t want to quit. That seems to me to be what he wants,” Trump said.

Biden remains defiant amid growing pressure to drop out of presidential race

“Through the Democratic nomination process, voters have made their opinion clear and unequivocal. I have received more than 14 million votes, representing 87 percent of the votes cast throughout the entire nomination process. I have received approximately 3,900 delegates, making me the party’s presumptive nominee by a wide margin,” Biden’s letter read in part.

“I can answer all of this clearly and without question: If I didn’t absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024, I would not be running again.”

Trump said he believes Vice President Kamala Harris would take over if Biden is forced to resign or steps down.

“I think she’s incompetent. She was in charge of the border, she’s never been there, she hasn’t done a good job, she’s not done her job in a lot of ways,” he told Hannity.

“From a political standpoint, it seems to me that they’re trying to pick the guy. They’re not even talking about alternatives.”

The former president added that because Biden holds so much power because of the number of delegates he has won so far, the only way Democrats can remove him from the race is to use the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.

“Unless they use the 25th Amendment, which I think they would use in a different way, I think he has all the power. He has the delegates. He doesn’t have to step down. There’s nothing they can do to get rid of him,” Trump said. “So he’s going to get the nomination.”

House Democrats held a virtual meeting The meeting was held over the weekend to discuss the future of Biden’s reelection campaign, following harsh criticism of his performance at CNN’s presidential debate.

Fox News senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram reported that during an online meeting convened by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, several Democratic leaders on House committees expressed their desire for Biden to step down.

“The day after the debate, I publicly stated my support for Joe Biden for President and the Democratic nominee,” Jeffries said. “My position has not changed.”

Biden and Trump are scheduled to debate again in September.
