Trump addresses reporters upon arriving in Phoenix ahead of TPUSA event

On Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump arrived in Phoenix and had a quick chat with reporters right after landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. He was on his way to a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event aimed at rallying young voters and boosting Republican support for the upcoming midterm elections in 2026.

Trump touched down on Air Force One shortly after 1:45 p.m. local time.

During a brief press scrum on the tarmac, he commented on various international issues, particularly the ongoing negotiations with Iran in light of recent tensions involving the Strait of Hormuz. However, there weren’t any significant policy declarations made in this short interaction, which lasted only a few minutes.

In his statements, Trump emphasized that talks with Iran are progressing. He mentioned that the U.S. and Iran are “closing in on a deal” that could resolve the current conflict, noting that, after Iran promised to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels, only a few differences remain.

“Talks are going on. It’ll go on over the weekend,” Trump said, reminding reporters that the U.S. naval blockade in the Strait would stay until a final agreement is reached. He also mentioned that Iran has shown readiness to make concessions that weren’t on the table a few months ago.

Trump described the discussions as encouraging and expressed hope for a soon resolution. He shared that this visit was part of “a very good discussion” and termed it “a big day,” though he didn’t elaborate on domestic issues during this short airport exchange.

Afterward, he traveled by motorcade to Dream City Church in north Phoenix, where he delivered the keynote speech at TPUSA’s “Build the Red Wall” event alongside TPUSA CEO Erika Kirk and notable Arizona Republican figures, including Rep. Andy Biggs.

This gathering aimed to energize the conservative youth movement, galvanizing a new wave of GOP voters to create a strong impact in the 2026 midterms. Analysts suggest that by mobilizing younger voters, the GOP not only aims to keep its current position but also to build a “decisive majority,” ensuring a more conservative future in critical regions like Arizona and beyond.

During his main address, Trump reiterated points regarding Iran, informing the audience that the Strait of Hormuz is “fully open and ready for business” while maintaining that the U.S. blockade remains until negotiations are favorably concluded. He also addressed domestic policies, focusing on economic strategies and tax cuts, appealing specifically to young voters.

This visit marks Trump’s return to Arizona about six months after he attended a memorial service for Charlie Kirk, the founder of TPUSA, who was tragically assassinated in September 2025. This event forms part of an early strategy by Trump and his conservative allies to strengthen their support in the West ahead of the midterms.
