Trump Admin Ends Translation Services for Immigration Agency After Declaring English the Official U.S. Language

The President has to make English the official language of the United States, along with the orders for March 1st. Instructions US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to cancel contracts with translation service providers Government executives magazine.

The translation services were provided to immigrants calling the department for information about their status under E-Verify and other government programs.

Formal guidelines are coming soon, the administration has pointed out.

Termination of Legal Interpreter Services Inc. is part of a broad and comprehensive government review of the rationale for each contract in which it is rewarded. USCIS's translation service cost up to $587,000 on the contract originally awarded in 2022, the magazine added.

DHS also has a broader contract with legal interpreting services that cost the government around $3.6 million. It is not yet known whether these translation services will be eligible for cancellations in other departments.

The president signed an executive order this month to make English the official language of the United States. This is a move that many supporters have wanted for decades.

Trump's order specifically pointed out that “new Americans” must be “encouraged” to learn English “to achieve the American dream.”

“Speaking English not only opens the door economically, but also helps newcomers engage with the community, participate in national traditions and give back to society,” the order said.
