Trump administration files a new lawsuit against Boston over sanctuary city policies

The Trump administration has taken legal action against the city of Boston and its officials, stating that the city’s policies interfere with immigration enforcement.

According to the lawsuit, Boston’s sanctuary city practices violate federal laws and have led to the release of individuals considered dangerous criminals who should have been deported.

Attorney General Pamela Bondy stated, “The city of Boston and its mayor ranked among the worst in the nation for sanctuary legality. They actively implement policies that weaken law enforcement and shield illegal immigrants from accountability. If Boston isn’t prioritizing the safety of its citizens, then this Department of Justice will step in.”

This is part of a broader pattern—similar lawsuits have been filed against other cities, such as Los Angeles, New York City, Denver, and Rochester in New York.

In May, four municipalities in New Jersey were also targeted in lawsuits.

Mayor Michelle Wu, mentioned as a plaintiff in this latest case, issued her own statement on Thursday, asserting that Boston is “strongly defending our laws and the constitutional rights of the city.”

Wu expressed that “this unconstitutional attack on our city is expected.” She went on to highlight Boston’s status as a vibrant community, the cultural and economic center of New England, and noted that it is the safest major city in the country. “However, the administration seems intent on undermining our community for its authoritarian aims,” she added.

While there’s no formal definition for sanctuary cities, the term typically refers to locations that limit collaboration with federal immigration enforcement. ICE seeks help from state and local authorities in enforcing immigration laws, which sometimes creates tension with local policies.
