Trump Administration Files Lawsuits Against Six States
On Thursday, the Trump administration initiated lawsuits against six states: California, Minnesota, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and New York. The Department of Justice (DOJ) claims these states have not taken control of their statewide voter registration lists. This legal action appears to be part of the administration’s ongoing push to bolster election integrity nationwide.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “A clean voter roll is essential for free and fair elections.” She emphasized that every state has a duty to ensure its voter registration records are accurate, accessible, and secure. If a state fails in this regard, it can expect to face legal action from the DOJ.
The lawsuits target Democratic officials such as state secretaries in California, Minnesota, and Michigan, as well as members of the New York State Election Commission. Republican officials in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania are also included in the complaints.
The DOJ pointed out that federal law mandates states to maintain effective voter registration and list maintenance programs. Each state’s situation varies, but the overarching issue is compliance with laws like the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, and the Civil Rights Act of 1960, all of which pertain to voting regulations.
According to the lawsuits, these six states have not provided the complete information from their voter registration lists and have been unresponsive regarding their maintenance efforts.
Hermeet Dillon, an advisor in the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, commented, “States must safeguard American elections by following federal election laws. A clean voter roll protects citizens from fraud and boosts confidence in the integrity of state elections.”
This isn’t the first time the Trump administration has acted on election integrity issues. Earlier this month, the DOJ filed lawsuits against Oregon and Maine for similar reasons, asserting that they hadn’t provided necessary voter registration documents. Additionally, another lawsuit was directed at Orange County, California. However, the administration recently chose to end litigation against North Carolina’s election commission, citing satisfactory progress in updating its voter registration list.
Back in March, President Trump signed a declaration aimed at “preserving and protecting the integrity of American elections,” which calls for adherence to federal laws designed to prevent illegal voting and discrimination. In May, new measures were introduced to help ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in federal elections, allowing officials to verify citizenship using Social Security numbers.
