Trump Administration Sues UCLA Over Anti-Semitism Claims

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the University of California System, particularly targeting the UCLA campus. The complaint alleges that UCLA has created a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli employees, fostering an anti-Semitic atmosphere.

On Tuesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) initiated the lawsuit in Los Angeles, reflecting the administration’s ongoing efforts to tackle anti-Semitism, especially following a surge of campus protests triggered by Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated, “Our investigation shows that UCLA administrators are suspected of perpetuating virulent anti-Semitism on campus and harming students and employees alike. Today’s case underscores that the Department of Justice stands firmly against hate and anti-Semitism in all its vile forms.”

The DOJ claims that UCLA has violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

The allegations include various incidents where the campus failed to prevent and address acts of discriminatory harassment. These incidents have reportedly included illegal encampments, physical assaults, and the use of anti-Semitic tropes that disrupted campus life.

The DOJ pointed out that “the university allowed anti-Semitic harassment to continue unabated for days in front of the iconic Royce Hall.” The statement detailed how Jews were blocked from certain areas on campus, Jewish professors faced assaults, and swastikas appeared on university buildings.

Furthermore, the department emphasized that UCLA has consistently ignored serious violations of established norms regarding viewpoint neutrality, which related to multiple acts targeting Jewish and Israeli employees.

In the previous summer, UCLA had settled a lawsuit for $6 million, which accused protesters of creating a “Jewish exclusion zone,” effectively barring Jewish individuals from parts of the campus.

The DOJ claims that UCLA also failed to investigate internal discrimination complaints and retaliated against faculty members who raised concerns. This included professors Ian Holloway and Kamran Shamsa, who filed their own discrimination complaints.

In a statement, UCLA affirmed that anti-Semitism is “abhorrent” and has “no place at UCLA or anywhere.” The university also mentioned an initiative aimed at combating anti-Semitism while assuring that reforms are in place to ensure accountability and oversight.

Deputy Prime Minister for Strategic Communications Mary Osako remarked that ongoing institutional efforts, including setting clear expectations and a commitment to enforcement, are yielding positive results. She reiterated the university’s dedication to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment.

The DOJ is not only seeking reform of UCLA’s policies but also monetary damages for the staff and professors impacted by these alleged acts. The Assistant Attorney General emphasized that the university needs to confront these appalling behaviors and the ongoing violations against its Jewish community, relating this to broader civil rights protections.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon remarked that the reported anti-Semitic acts at UCLA are disgraceful and that the DOJ will work to ensure a harassment-free environment for all university employees.
