Trump administration permits New York wind farm project to continue building after intervention from Hochul and Adams

The Trump administration lifted a suspension order on Monday that was jeopardizing over 1,000 jobs related to a wind farm project off Long Island.

Construction at the Empire Wind 1 site had been halted since April 16 after the Interior Bureau determined that the Biden administration had effectively expressed approval for the project and its permit.

This initiative is expected to power about 500,000 homes with renewable energy from wind turbines, aligning with New York’s ambitious goal to shift to fossil fuel alternatives by 2050. However, it has come under unexpected scrutiny from Nassau County officials, who argue it could endanger marine wildlife and local fisheries.

After discussions with Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, officials in the Trump administration decided to lift the halt order. Hochul had already promised to challenge the order as soon as it was enacted, emphasizing that the bipartisan initiative was “already put the shovel on the ground.”

“We knew this essential project needed to proceed, and we had been lobbying the federal government to allow workers back and cancel the work stoppage,” Hochul remarked.

“I want to express my gratitude to President Trump for collaborating with me to protect the jobs of 1,500 well-paid union members, which will ensure this vital project gets back on track. New York’s economic future will depend on the clean energy that supports our homes and businesses.”

Mayor Adams also commended the administration’s decision.

“We appreciate that President Trump and Secretary Doug Burgham took into account our detailed review and requests for construction to resume, and now we’re cooperating with the city, state, and various stakeholders to get this project going again,” Adams stated.

“This showcases what can be accomplished when we engage in collaboration instead of conflict to benefit the federal government for all Americans.”

The Wind Farm Project is slated to begin commercial operations in 2027. Equinor, the parent company of Empire Offshore Wind, expressed gratitude towards both political sides.

“I want to thank President Trump for facilitating a resolution that preserved thousands of American jobs and fosters ongoing investments in U.S. energy infrastructure. I also appreciate Governor Hochul’s constructive cooperation with the Trump administration,” a spokesperson mentioned.

With the renewed permission, Equinor plans to conduct a “revised assessment of project economics” this summer, asserting that it remains on track to meet the intended operational start date in 2027.
