The Trump administration is cutting millions in security funding for Washington, D.C., even as the president calls for increased federal law enforcement presence due to rising crime rates he deems “out of control.”
According to a grant notice from last week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reduced the Urban Security Fund for D.C. by 44% to $25.2 million compared to last year.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, noted on Friday that funding was slashed for several cities to align with the current threat landscape. While Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Jersey City also saw reductions, D.C.’s cut was the most significant among urban areas benefitting from last year’s funding.
DHS has observed a shift from large-scale coordinated attacks—like those seen on 9/11—to smaller, simpler attacks, leaving urban areas more vulnerable to crimes in crowded spaces.
Despite the funding cuts, violent crime in D.C. has reportedly dropped by 35% from 2023 to 2024, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. This includes a notable 30% decrease in homicides, a 22% drop in sexual offenses, and a 27% decline in incidents involving dangerous weapons, although robbery only saw a slight dip of 8%.
Federal funding is typically allocated to address security needs in the nation’s capital and surrounding regions in Maryland and Virginia. FEMA is investing $553.5 million to enhance security in cities nationwide, but it remains unclear how much of that budget will benefit the D.C. area.
In previous years, local officials have utilized federal funds for various initiatives, like replacing Hazmat training, hiring officers, and upgrading emergency communication systems, as noted in a 2016 report from D.C.’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
On Thursday, President Trump directed an increase in federal law enforcement in D.C. following a series of violent incidents, including one where a former Doge staff member was attacked in broad daylight.
Trump expressed his concerns, stating that crime in D.C. is “completely out of control.” He mentioned that local youths and gang members, as young as 14 years old, are committing crimes against innocent citizens.
The president emphasized that D.C. should be a place that showcases safety, cleanliness, and beauty, not just for Americans, but for the world. He indicated that if local authorities are unable to manage the situation swiftly, the federal government may have to step in to regain control over the city.
He seemed to suggest that perhaps, unfortunately, incidents of violent crime have persisted due to a lack of timely action.
