Remembrance of Assault on Trump in Pennsylvania
On July 13, 2026, President Donald Trump and the White House marked the two-year anniversary of an assassination attempt that occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attack in 2024 resulted in Trump’s minor injury, but tragically took the life of one rally attendee and left two others seriously injured.
During a campaign event on that day in 2024, gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at Trump from a nearby rooftop, narrowly missing his right ear and prompting Secret Service agents to swiftly evacuate him from the scene. The shooting led to the death of Corey Comperatore, who was attending the rally, and injured two others.
In a recent discussion on “Fox & Friends,” Trump recounted the terrifying experience, expressing gratitude to the U.S. Secret Service and other officials who swiftly responded when gunfire erupted.
“They blew Butler because they had one building that was empty,” Trump said, referring to the situation. “At the same time—David, our sniper from 300 yards, was able to act within less than four seconds and took out somebody that he didn’t know existed.”
He continued, praising the bravery of those around him: “I had a lot of people on top of me. The Secret Service was very brave. They were on top of me very quickly, and I knew exactly what was happening.”
On the anniversary, the White House released a post reflecting on Trump’s resilience in light of the incident.
“Fight. Fight. Fight,” the message stated. “Two years ago today, in Butler, PA, an assassin opened fire on President Donald J. Trump. By the grace of God, his life was spared. As he rose to his feet – blood on his face, fist raised high – that moment became an enduring symbol of resilience and unbreakable determination for our nation.”
Republicans across the country remembered Corey Comperatore, the 50-year-old former fire chief who lost his life while shielding his family from the gunfire that day.
Two other attendees, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, were critically injured during the shooting. Both men, who endured multiple surgeries, ultimately survived but continue to cope with the physical and emotional aftermath of that fateful day.
“In a split second, he shielded his daughter and wife with his body, saving their lives at the cost of his own,” noted a recent tweet. “His last act was love, and love like that never dies.”
