South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham dies at age 71

Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, a prominent figure in Republican foreign policy discussions, has passed away at the age of 71. His death has prompted responses from lawmakers across the political spectrum, including Senators Chris Coons and Cory Booker, as well as international figures like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, all reflecting on his lasting impact. Additionally, South Carolina Congresswoman Sheri Biggs has commented on her own career and the impending special primary to fill her seat.

Reportedly, Graham delayed seeking medical attention until after his scheduled appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” It seems he was feeling unwell shortly before he died unexpectedly from what was described as a “short and sudden illness.” In what appeared to be his last conversation, he acknowledged feeling unwell to a colleague, who encouraged him to get medical help. However, Graham stated he would wait until after his TV appearance.

Before his untimely death, he reportedly told someone during a call with President Donald Trump that there were still important tasks to tackle, mentioning sanctions on Russia and relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Graham’s office released preliminary details about the cause of death, indicating he suffered from an aortic dissection linked to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Aortic dissection is a severe and life-threatening condition involving a tear in the main artery. Further examinations are pending, as Graham’s office indicated that the death certificate would be updated once toxicology and microscopic analyses are complete.

President Trump mentioned on “Meet the Press” that he believed he was among the last to speak with Graham, expressing disbelief at the news of his passing and reflecting on their close relationship.

In his time, Graham focused on significant foreign policy issues, particularly the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. His recent endeavors also included garnering support for sanctions against Russia to hinder its military efforts.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who worked alongside Graham internationally, stated that his passing should stimulate the passage of a sanctions package aimed at Russia as a tribute to his legacy and the ideals he championed, particularly for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The Senate is set to reconvene, but Graham’s death has triggered a power struggle and discussions around who will take his place in South Carolina. Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman are both preparing for the upcoming special election, but first, Governor Henry McMaster must appoint an interim replacement by the end of the year.

This development could impact President Trump’s agenda as well, including important legislation like the National Defense Authorization Act and other nominations, which Graham strongly supported.
