Export Restrictions on Anthropic’s AI Models Lifted
The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that export limitations on Anthropic’s new AI Model 2 have been removed. This follows the company’s cooperation with the Department of Commerce during a national security review.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has canceled previous export controls on Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 models.
“Due to the Bureau of Industry and Security’s evaluation of the diversion risks associated with Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5, the regulations from the June 12 communication are now withdrawn,” Lutnick mentioned in a post on X. “A license is no longer required for exporting, reexporting, or internal transfers of the mythos and fable models.”
Anthropic has confirmed that it received the Department of Commerce’s notice regarding the lifted restrictions.

Anthropic expressed its gratitude to users for their understanding during the restriction phase, assuring that access to its models would be restored soon.
“We appreciate our users’ patience and everyone who assisted in redeploying the model,” the company stated in a post on X.
Lutnick emphasized that this decision was made in close collaboration with Anthropic and the federal government.
Concerns Over Recklessness
The Commerce Secretary noted that the evaluation of the Fable 5 model was part of ensuring synchronization across the U.S. government to maintain leadership in AI technology.
Anthropic stands as a leading player in the AI field, with its Claude models competing with offerings from other major companies like OpenAI and Google.
The recent decision from the Commerce Department eliminates the licensing requirements that previously governed exports and transfers of affected AI models.
However, it remains unclear what specific adjustments or assurances led to the federal decision to lift the restrictions after the announcements made on June 12.
Neither the Department of Commerce nor Anthropic responded immediately to requests for comments regarding the changes.
