Trump administration requests Supreme Court to reject Ghislaine Maxwell's appeal

Justice Department Requests Supreme Court to Deny Maxwell’s Claims

On Monday, the Justice Department urged the Supreme Court to reject claims from Ghislaine Maxwell regarding her sex trafficking conviction.

Maxwell, 63, was found guilty in a New York court in 2021 on five counts related to sex trafficking involving minors and conspiracy. She received a 20-year prison sentence.

In her attempts to have the conviction overturned, Maxwell cited various reasons, including a 2007 plea deal that her associate, Jeffrey Epstein, made with the federal government. She believes this deal affects her case.

Epstein’s Death and DOJ Claims

The DOJ has stated that Epstein’s death was ruled a suicide and emphasized the absence of a client list related to him.

Despite the Second Circuit Court of Appeals declining to hear Maxwell’s appeal, she has argued that any immunity granted through the 2007 agreements should be a consideration for the Supreme Court.

Currently, Maxwell is serving her sentence in Tallahassee, Florida, expected to conclude in 2037.

The Department of Justice’s stance comes amid recent tensions from supporters of former President Donald Trump, particularly over claims regarding the availability of new evidence in the Epstein case. Epstein faced charges in 2019 for sex trafficking but died before trial.

Controversy Surrounding Epstein’s Client List

Some former Trump administration officials suggested that the government might be withholding key details related to Epstein, although these claims have since been retracted.

There is speculation that Congress may call on Maxwell to testify, with an anonymous source indicating her willingness to do so. However, her legal team has not provided comments on this matter.

Interestingly, one of her lawyers made a remark regarding Trump’s stance. He expressed surprise that Trump might not be aware of his lawyers’ request to the Supreme Court regarding the government’s deal, highlighting that Trump is known for his negotiation skills. He added that it seems unjust for Maxwell to continue serving time based on commitments made by the government.
