US Administration Suspends Visa Processing for Many Countries

On Wednesday, the Trump administration made a significant announcement regarding immigration from various countries. The US Department of State revealed its decision to suspend immigrant visa processing for 75 nations, claiming that “immigrants are depriving American citizens of welfare benefits at unacceptable amounts.” This moratorium is set to continue until the government feels confident that new immigrants won’t put a strain on American resources.

This suspension influences a number of countries, including Somalia, Haiti, Iran, and Eritrea. According to the government, migrants from these areas often face scrutiny regarding public charges in the US.

Recent data from the Immigration Research Center highlighted that over half—about 54%—of Somali households in Minnesota rely on food stamps, while a staggering 73% have at least one family member enrolled in Medicaid. For comparison, only 7% of Indigenous households in the same state are recipients of food assistance.

Additionally, the report specified that 89% of Somali families with children receive some kind of welfare benefits in Minnesota.

President Trump referenced these figures on Truth Social, pointing out the high rates of welfare dependency in other immigrant communities as well.

On January 4th, the President shared a troubling graph labeled “Immigrant welfare receipt rates by country of origin,” indicating significant reliance on American taxpayer support among various immigrant groups. For instance, the data showed that 81.4% of migrant households from Bhutan received assistance, while Yemen reported 75.2%. Somalia was also highlighted with 71.9% of its migrant households receiving aid.

On November 27, President Trump asserted the decision to “end all federal benefits and subsidies for noncitizens” and to “permanently halt immigration from all Third World countries” as a means to restore the integrity of the American system.

This suspension of visa processing will go into effect on January 21st.

Moreover, the list of affected countries includes Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and many more, totaling a significant number of nations.

In response to these developments, the State Department stated that efforts are underway to ensure that the generosity offered by American citizens is not being misused.
