Trump Visits Florida’s New Immigration Detention Center
During a recent stop at Alligator Alcatraz in the Florida Everglades, California Governor Gavin Newsom was brought into the conversation as President Donald Trump emphasized the need for him to “learn something” about handling illegal immigration.
When a reporter asked Trump what message he had for Newsom, Trump replied, “The first thing he should do is come here and learn something because they don’t do this.” He expressed concerns about California’s approach, stating, “They don’t know where to start, and if that’s the case, it’s going to cost them more.” He pointed to the situation in California as a “disaster.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis chimed in, noting that California has the original Alcatraz, suggesting it could be converted into an immigration detention facility.
Trump’s visit coincided with the grand opening of the Everglades Detention Center, nicknamed “Wannial Catraz.” This center is located in an area notorious for its native reptiles, like crocodiles and pythons.
Under a recent emergency order, Florida approved the construction of this detention center in Miami-Dade County. The facility, which was a former airport, is expected to house up to 5,000 immigrants as part of a broader effort to address illegal immigration during the ongoing deportation initiatives.
The backdrop of this visit was marked by tensions in Los Angeles, where protests erupted in June over federal immigration enforcement actions. Local leaders, including Newsom, criticized the federal response, leading to violence during the protests.
Trump also reflected on his relationship with DeSantis, following their competitive exchanges during the 2024 presidential election cycle. He mentioned support from DeSantis in promoting his campaign since January 2024.
Despite these discussions, it’s interesting to note that while Trump and DeSantis agree on many issues, there are instances where their approaches diverge slightly—creating a dynamic landscape in the political arena.
