Trump advisor defends strategy for rally tour in red states for the midterms

Trump and Vance lead the inaugural GOP midterm convention in Dallas

A campaign strategist familiar with Donald Trump’s efforts for the 2024 election recently shared insights into the president’s rally tour across 32 states ahead of the midterms, arguing that commentators are misinterpreting the approach. On Thursday, Trump addressed a crowd in Denton, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, before heading to Oklahoma, a state that has remained firmly Republican since Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency. On Friday, he is scheduled to rally in Mobile, Alabama, another traditionally conservative state.

While some political analysts believe Trump’s busy schedule could indicate trouble for the GOP this November, Luke Ball, who understands how Trump operates on the campaign trail, suggests otherwise. “I think many people are taking a lazy approach when they claim he’s just in red states,” Ball noted.

According to him, Texas and Oklahoma are closely connected, and appearances in these states could enhance Republican turnout in November, particularly in swing areas within solidly Republican regions.

Though he acknowledges the strategy may be risky for Trump, Ball contends that this extensive tour is far from a last-minute decision. “There’s a reason for this. The RNC and other groups have collected data showing who is likely to support the president, and this information drives their decisions,” he explained.

MAGA Inc., a Super PAC that has previously invested heavily in Trump’s campaign, is now supporting Republican congressional hopefuls nationwide. James Blair, who was Trump’s 2024 campaign political director, currently serves as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff.

Ball highlighted that Mobile, Alabama, holds significance in the broader campaign strategy, particularly due to its connection with the Pensacola, Florida market, which is crucial for motivating voter turnout across the state. “If you want to secure your position in Florida, you’ve got to make sure that support is locked in,” he noted.

Additionally, the media attention surrounding these rallies plays a role in the overall strategy. Ball suggests that typical candidates often refine their schedules meticulously, but Trump’s approach of holding numerous events across solidly Republican areas ultimately garners substantial national media coverage.

Trump’s recent stop in Denton included a tour of a local truck manufacturing plant, which Ball views as an integral aspect of the campaign strategy. “I recall my former co-campaign manager emphasizing that each visit should offer something unique. Now, instead of just popping into a local diner, he’s visiting significant industry sites while still ensuring his rallies reach the media market effectively,” he elaborated.
