Trump’s Reaction to Ukraine’s Drone Attack on Russian Forces
President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s June 1 drone strike on Russian bombers, labeling it as “bad,” according to Axios.
He mentioned that he would take charge of the situation and described Ukraine’s actions as “very strong.” Trump seemed “impressed” by their operation, which had been in the works for over a year, targeting at least 10 Russian bomber fleets during complex negotiations. This move appears to reflect Ukraine’s commitment to continue fighting for peace.
During a call on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed to Trump that these attacks threaten any potential ceasefire discussions as well as high-level meetings with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. He stated that Moscow feels obligated to respond to the recent Ukrainian drone strikes.
Trump characterized the conversation as “not a discussion that leads to immediate peace,” although he also noted it was a “good conversation.”
The Ukrainian strike reportedly involved more than 100 drones smuggled into Russia through cargo containers. The operation, referred to as “Spider Web,” employed a specialized removable roof, allowing drones to take off and target specific locations, particularly Russian airfields.
This incident unfolds as both nations grapple with reaching a peace agreement. Trump previously described the ongoing conflict as a “bloodbath” and has indicated he wants to bring an end to the war as part of his 2024 campaign platform, promising “peace within a day.” Since his time in office, Trump’s relationship with Zelensky has been tumultuous. Ukraine has reportedly felt “offended” regarding the aid provided. Notably, Trump recently canceled a signing ceremony in February after Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky for lacking gratitude during the war.
Despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations, a significant mineral trade agreement was eventually signed between the U.S. and Ukraine.
In Russia, responses to the drone attack were swift, with Fox News commentator Brit Hume asserting that these Ukrainian strikes revealed the “embarrassing” weaknesses of the Russian military. Conversely, Democratic strategist James Kerrville defended Zelensky’s choice not to inform Trump about the attack beforehand.
As of now, the White House has not responded to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation regarding this issue.
