Chaos at White House Correspondents’ Dinner
During the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated due to gunfire that erupted in the vicinity.
As shots rang out, attendees were seen taking cover under tables and seeking safe spots. It was a frantic scene, captured on cameras inside the ballroom.
Following the incident, President Trump took to Truth Social to inform that the shooter had been apprehended, commending the prompt actions of the Secret Service and police. He noted, “The D.C. Secret Service and law enforcement did a great job. They acted quickly and bravely.” Although he mentioned urging the suspect to “let the show go on,” any actions would be strictly guided by law enforcement.
In a press briefing after the event, Trump described the initial situation: “A man charged into the security checkpoint with multiple weapons and was subdued by very brave members of the Secret Service.”
He also revealed that one police officer was shot at close range but was fortunate enough to survive due to his bulletproof vest. “I spoke with the police officer… and he’s in very good condition,” Trump said.
With the aim of highlighting the rapid response of the authorities, the president shared surveillance footage from the shooter’s entrance. He expressed that the video aimed to show both “the violence of thugs who attacked our Constitution” and the swift actions taken by the Secret Service.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that charges against the suspect would be forthcoming, stating during a White House briefing, “This investigation is ongoing. I think he will be prosecuted soon.” He further mentioned that there would be multiple charges related to the shooting and possession of firearms.
The suspect has been identified as Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from California. It appears he acted alone and was found with several weapons, as reported by the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.
Federal agents conducted a search at Allen’s home in Torrance early Sunday morning, again emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
On a call, President Trump discussed rescheduling the Correspondents’ Dinner, asserting that “really bad people” like the shooter would not be allowed to dictate the course of the nation.
