Immigration Tensions Surrounding World Cup Events in NYC
New York City’s Mayor Zoran Mamdani has stated that the Trump administration will not be sending federal immigration officials to World Cup soccer events. This declaration comes in response to recent comments made by border czar Tom Homan, who warned of an increase in the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the city.
Mamdani expressed his dissatisfaction with Homan’s remarks and highlighted the valuable contributions of immigrants to the World Cup events in New York. “There is no soccer without immigrants. They play, coach, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible. Six players on the U.S. Men’s National Team are immigrants,” he noted.
“We won’t let ICE or anyone else instill fear in our communities, especially not at this time,” Mamdani asserted, underscoring a sense of unity with immigrant neighbors in the face of divisive rhetoric.
Homan’s comments emerged after he criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for allegedly obstructing routine deportation operations. “We will see more ICE in New York City than ever before,” Homan stated in a recent interview, although he couldn’t specify when this increase would occur.
Moreover, Mamdani also took aim at President Trump for travel restrictions affecting attendees at World Cup events in the U.S. He questioned the commitment to the tournament’s spirit if players, teams, and journalists are barred from entering the country.
“If we can’t even let the players and journalists come, it really raises concerns about our dedication to this tournament,” he said during a press conference at a FIFA promotional event.
He further advocated for the abolition of ICE, deeming its raids “cruel and inhumane” and not beneficial for public safety.
The Department of Homeland Security responded to Mamdani’s comments, stating, “Apparently [Mayor Mamdani] doesn’t believe that arresting rapists, murderers, and other serious criminals serves public safety.” They emphasized that while sanctuary city politicians continue to fight for undocumented immigrants, ICE agents will persist in their efforts to keep New Yorkers safe.
