During the heated rivalry between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, discussions emerged about Musk’s potential impact on Trump’s chances in the 2024 election. In comments to reporters, Trump expressed that he believed he would have won last year’s election had it not been for Musk’s support.
Musk countered with his own claim, suggesting that without his involvement, Trump would have lost. This once-strong partnership began to unravel on Thursday, as they traded jabs over Trump’s tax policies and spending, which eventually led to discussions regarding the 2020 presidential election.
Musk may be reaching out to Trump’s team in an effort to mend relations. Although he joined forces with Trump last summer and fall, his support followed a dramatic incident involving an assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania.
In the lead-up to the 2024 election cycle, Musk emerged as a significant financial backer, contributing nearly $300 million mainly through a super PAC for Trump. His financial backing focused heavily on critical battleground states, particularly Pennsylvania, where he took the stage with Trump during rallies.
Trump acknowledges the advantages of Musk’s campaigning efforts, noting the aid from his Chief of Staff, and implying that they would succeed regardless of challenges faced in Pennsylvania.
However, Musk’s recent critiques indicate a shift in tone. He’s recently taken to social media, asserting that he played a crucial role in Trump’s electoral strategy. Notably, he stated, “Without me, Trump would lose the election…” and emphasized the essential nature of his support.
Political analysts offer mixed views, with some emphasizing the importance of Trump himself as the key figure who attracted votes. John Bravender, a political strategist, reflected that while external support can be influential, ultimately voters chose Trump. Others, like veteran consultant Dave Carney, affirmed that both Trump and Musk hold valid perspectives on their shared efforts.
Erie County GOP Chairman Tom Eddie remarked on Musk’s influence, suggesting that Trump recognizes the contributions but still wants to assert his own victory as the primary factor. Veteran strategist Dennis Lennox acknowledged Musk’s statements, hinting they might come off as arrogant yet hold some truth.
