Trump and Musk risk radicalizing veterans

George Washington is said to have argued that “a nation is judged by how well it treats veterans.” Well, it was a tough month for American veterans.

President Trump and the world's wealthiest man, Elon Musk, have a chainsaw with the federal government, fired thousands of workers and cut funds for many programs. They also claim they have eliminated the government's DEI, claiming that the fired employees are either bad performers or engaged in waste, fraud and abuse.

It turns out that a significant portion of the fired people are veterans. Now Republicans must confront the fact that Trump and Musk's actions are coming back to plague them in a mid-term election or more (not May). In addition to the shooting, veterans have found the VA program being cut, with Republicans refusing to protect other interests from the musk rampage.

Veterans make up 30% of federal laborbut only 5% of the private workforce. There are many reasons for this. Many government jobs are alongside the military experience of veterans. Many veterans still want to serve and view civil servants as a path to doing so. And for many, it's an easy transition and quite difficult in the corporate world.

Federal workers veterans aren't the only ones to worry about. While preparing for the election, the alarm bell was ringed by almost every veteran advocacy group who benefited from healthcare, education, disability payments, job preferences, housing assistance and more.

That fear is a step closer to being realized with news that the Senate signaled it. They will refuse protection Wealth benefits for veterans under the agreement law. This denial by everyone except one Republican Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) gives credit to the horrors of Doge, Trump and their Acolite taking chainsaws to the VA while they sell stories of waste, fraud and abuse to the public.

This all portends badly for the Republicans. Veterans generally vote for Republicans in every election. Even if Republicans oppose veteran care and benefits ( Celebrate the vote (against veteran health care), they hold support from men and women in uniform.

It can all change and can change soon. Democrats will certainly jump at the opportunities to protect the work, benefits and rights of veterans. Veterans will be paying attention to this.

This is not the first time a Republican has violated an American veterinarian.
