Trump and Putin to Meet Amid Ukraine Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not included in the recent peace talks set by Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, a decision confirmed by the White House. As the invitations expanded, the talks are aiming for a clearer understanding of how to end the ongoing conflict.
“The president has agreed to this meeting at President Putin’s request,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated. “And the aim is for the President to leave with a better grasp of how this war can be concluded.”
It’s notable that Trump will be meeting face-to-face with Putin, which is a significant shift from typical phone conversations. It’s the first time in a decade that the two leaders are set to meet in person.
Zelensky expressed his strong belief that peace negotiations that exclude Ukraine are fundamentally flawed. “Decisions made against us, decisions made without Ukraine—these are essentially dead decisions. They never work. What we need is genuine peace that people can respect,” he remarked in a statement.
Trump mentioned he expects to quickly assess whether Putin is earnest about negotiating a deal. He acknowledged that the agreement would involve navigating various “land exchanges” issues.
The upcoming summit in Alaska is a focal point for Trump this week, with discussions surrounding the Ukrainian war at the forefront.
Post-meeting, Trump indicated he plans to reach out to Zelensky and other European leaders. “If it’s a fair deal, I’ll share it with EU and NATO leaders, as well as President Zelensky,” he said. “You might think, ‘Good luck, keep fighting.’”
When asked if the meeting could lead to a peace agreement, Leavitt mentioned that no possibilities have been ruled out. “The President has always voiced a desire for peace. Yet, it’s essential for both countries to agree on any deal,” she added.
Trump and Putin’s first in-person meeting since the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion is scheduled for Friday. The choice of Alaska as their meeting place has been described as an honor for the President, emphasizing the symbolic nature of hosting Putin on American soil.
