Trump and Vance excluded from Dick Cheney’s funeral

Funeral for Former Vice President Dick Cheney

On November 20, 2025, former Vice President Dick Cheney was laid to rest, but notable absences at the ceremony caught attention. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance did not attend, which is especially striking given the tradition of former presidents and vice presidents showing their respects at such events. This absence perhaps underscores the complicated relationship between Trump and the Cheney family.

The funeral was attended by former President George W. Bush, who delivered a eulogy for Cheney, his vice president during both terms in office. Among the attendees were former President Joe Biden and former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle. Also present were GOP Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Nancy Pelosi.

Cheney passed away on November 3, 2025, due to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Many regard him as one of the most influential vice presidents, especially for his significant role in shaping national security policy after the September 11 attacks.

His legacy includes being viewed as a leading figure in the war on terror and advocating for the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, promoting a preemptive foreign policy that resulted in considerable loss of American lives.

Interestingly, both Cheney and his daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney, supported Kamala Harris during her 2024 presidential run against Trump. Liz Cheney also played a pivotal role in the House investigation regarding Trump’s involvement in the January 6 Capitol protests.

The Cheney family shared a statement following his passing: “Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed.”

They also remarked, “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country.”
