Trump Administration to Cut Federal Funding for Sanctuary Cities
President Donald Trump has announced that federal payments will cease for sanctuary cities and states beginning February 1. He cited concerns over these jurisdictions providing shelter to criminals and encouraging fraud and crime.
During his speech at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump explained that this action aims to penalize cities and states that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities. He stated, “After February 1st, we will not make any payments to sanctuary cities or states because they are doing everything they can to protect criminals at the expense of the American people.” He added that this protection leads to various issues including fraud and crime.
Additionally, Trump criticized state officials in Minnesota, highlighting allegations of widespread fraud. He remarked, “Minnesota has a lot of scammers, and we have stopped payments associated with them. It’s a great state. It was a great state. Now it’s being destroyed by that stupid governor.” This comment underscored his accusations against governors, claiming that they ignore corruption and fraud within their states.
Meanwhile, a federal judge recently blocked five states, including Minnesota, from halting subsidies for child care programs amid fraud allegations from the Trump administration. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled that these states had met the legal criteria to maintain funding temporarily as legal discussions continue.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has also indicated it will withhold funding from five Democratic-led states over similar concerns of fraud and misuse of federal funds.
This situation is ongoing, and updates may emerge as the legal proceedings unfold.
