Trump announces Iran ceasefire is on ‘Life Support’ after turning down counterproposal

Ceasefire Between U.S. and Iran Faces Serious Threat

President Donald Trump expressed serious concerns on Monday about the fragile state of the ongoing ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. He described it as being on “massive life support,” suggesting only a “1 percent chance of survival” after he firmly rejected Iran’s recent diplomatic counterproposal.

“I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support … when the doctor walks in and says, ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1 percent chance of living,’” Trump remarked during a session with reporters. “I would call it the weakest right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn’t even finish reading it.”

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump hinted that a return to conflict could be on the horizon. This development comes amidst tensions that have already impacted global shipping and caused fluctuations in energy markets.

“I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” he added on Truth Social.

The president’s comments followed a weekend of intense diplomatic talks mediated by Pakistan, aimed at reconciling the U.S. demand for a complete nuclear rollback with Iran’s call for regional autonomy.

Trump voiced exasperation over a previously agreed provision missing from the counterproposal, which would have allowed the U.S. or China to remove Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. “They keep walking back agreed positions,” he said, accusing Iranian negotiators of “playing games” rather than showing real intent to abandon their nuclear ambitions.

The counterproposal from Tehran, labeled “reasonable and responsible” by Iranian state media, included demands for an end to the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, the release of frozen assets, and a temporary halt on oil sanctions.

Additionally, Iran requested full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and reparations for conflict damages—a stance the White House has labeled “unacceptable.”

However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei defended the proposal, stating that Tehran’s main focus is on lifting what they see as excessive sanctions, rather than revisiting nuclear discussions, which they believe have led to recent hostilities.

The diplomatic impasse comes at a critical moment, with a ceasefire technically in place since April 8th but accompanied by a rise in “gray zone” confrontations, including drone strikes on vessels near Qatar and the U.A.E. The U.S. military has also continued its blockade of Iranian ports since mid-April, disabling several commercial vessels attempting to breach the perimeter.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported Trump’s firm approach, stating that the situation remains unresolved as long as Iran has nuclear capabilities and enriched uranium.

As the ceasefire teeters on the brink, the Trump administration has maintained that Iran’s air and naval capacities have been effectively countered. Still, Iran has declared its readiness for a “powerful confrontation” under the direction of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Current Status of Mojtaba’s Health

Iranian State Reports: As of Sunday, Iranian officials claimed that Khamenei is in “full health” and recuperating. They admitted for the first time that he was injured during strikes on February 28th, sustaining injuries to his knee and back, as well as a minor injury behind his ear. They dismissed rumors of severe facial injuries.

U.S. / Western Intelligence: Contrary to official reports, numerous intelligence assessments suggest his injuries were more severe than indicated, possibly disfiguring. The lack of a recent public appearance, with communication limited to written statements, has fueled speculation.

Trump is set to travel to Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day summit with President Xi Jinping, where he plans to pressure China regarding its ongoing support for Iran in both economic and military terms.

A senior administration official noted the President’s intention to confront Xi about the flow of Chinese revenue to Iran through oil sales and dual-use technologies, which Washington believes directly assist Iranian military operations against U.S. forces in the region.
