In a tragic incident, a boyfriend, after agreeing to an open relationship, allegedly shot his girlfriend and her new partner in their San Diego home, according to prosecutors.
Ryan Wesley Proffitt, 27, faces charges for the deaths of Courtney Chandler, 28, and Nicholas McClure, 27, who had recently moved into the couple’s military housing in Ramona.
Prosecutors explained that Proffitt’s jealousy intensified as Chandler and McClure’s relationship developed. Following the alleged shooting on Monday, he called 911, describing it as a “lover’s fight.”
Chandler, identified as homeless by prosecutors, had been staying with them for about a week and a half.
The prosecution argues that Proffitt planned the shooting, loading and hiding a firearm before confronting Chandler and McClure. It seems Chandler was aware of the gun, having texted a friend about it.
During the altercation, McClure reportedly charged at Proffitt, who then fired three shots, subsequently turning the gun on Chandler.
When authorities arrived, they found Proffitt sitting on the steps of a military facility, drinking beer.
He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and is currently held without bail.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched in Chandler’s memory, describing her as a beloved member of the Navy community, known for her vibrant personality and love for the outdoors, anime, and family traditions like Thanksgiving.
The campaign mentioned that Chandler had her upcoming 29th birthday on July 24th, and her tragic death has left her family heartbroken.
Meanwhile, McClure’s mother shared that he had moved to California from Kentucky in search of new opportunities.
The investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing.
