Trump announces Japan F-35 missiles during USS George Washington visit

During a visit to the USS George Washington at Yokosuka Naval Base, President Donald Trump informed U.S. soldiers that the initial shipment of missiles for Japan’s F-35 fighter jets is set to arrive this week. This suggests that a key defense delivery to Tokyo is ahead of schedule.

This address to sailors was part of Trump’s broader tour of Asia, which also included meetings in Malaysia with Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, where they signed a new agreement regarding rare earth minerals. Later in the week, he is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Washington has approved the sale of significant weaponry to Japan, such as advanced AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9X air-to-air missiles tailored for the F-35.

Trump emphasized the strong partnership between the U.S. and Japan, describing it as “one of the most remarkable relationships in the entire world.”

In her remarks, Prime Minister Takaichi stated that Japan aims to “fundamentally strengthen its defense capabilities” and is “ready to contribute even more actively to peace and stability in the region.”

Trump noted the record highs in both Japanese and U.S. stock markets, suggesting it’s an indicator that “we’re doing the right thing.”

As tensions continue with China and North Korea, Trump’s appearance underscored the U.S.’s commitment to enhancing security collaboration with Japan. Despite his repeated invitations to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a meeting, no specific plans have materialized.
