President-elect Donald Trump appears ready to take action on threats to impose tariffs on other countries to achieve his foreign policy goals.
On Monday he announced Citing immigration and other concerns, he announced tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China via social media.
“We hereby demand that they use this power. Until they do, it is time for them to pay a very dear price!”
“As everyone knows, thousands of people are streaming into Mexico and Canada, bringing with them levels of crime and drugs never seen before. “The border is now open,” Trump wrote.
“On January 20th, in one of my first of many executive orders, I will impose on Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products imported into the United States and their ridiculous border opening. This tariff will remain in effect until drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens are stopped from invading our country! ” he added.
“We hereby demand that they use this power. Until they do, it's time for them to pay a very high price!” Trump concluded.
In a second post he said he would impose tariffs Regarding China regarding fentanyl being sent to the US
“I have had numerous discussions with China about the large quantities of drugs, especially fentanyl, being sent to the United States, but to no avail. The drug dealers were caught doing this, but unfortunately they never followed through, primarily through Mexico, at levels never seen before. “Drugs are coming into our country,” he wrote.
He added: “We will impose an additional 10% tariff on China, above and beyond any additional tariffs, on many Chinese products imported into the United States until the restrictions are suspended.”
Free market advocates have criticized President Trump for pushing through tariffs, saying they typically lead to trade wars that drive up prices and backfire on markets.
