President-elect Donald Trump quickly named another candidate for attorney general in his administration after Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew his candidacy.
Trump announced his selection on social media Thursday night.
“For too long, a partisan Department of Justice has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans, and that's no longer the case. Pam will lead the Department to fight crime and make America safe again.” It will refocus on its original purpose.”
“I am proud to announce former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as the next Attorney General of the United States.” he wrote.
“Pam served as a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, was tough on violent criminals, and kept our streets safe for Florida families,” he added. “She then served as Florida's first female attorney general, working to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs and reduce the tragedies of fentanyl overdoses that have devastated so many families across the country.”
Mr. Bondi must be confirmed by the Senate.
The selection was praised by many on the right, and liberal commentators on MSNBC were no doubt outraged by the decision.
“She's a risky and effective pick,” Jason Johnson said. “Frankly, we would have gotten Matt Gaetz, given his disastrous moral background. It’s worse than anything else.”
Trump went on to say he would stop weaponizing the Justice Department against Republicans.
“For too long, a partisan Department of Justice has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans, and that will no longer be the case. Pam will lead the Department of Justice to fight crime and make America safe again. “We will refocus on the original purpose of creating,” the president-elect continued.
“I've known Pam for years,” he concluded. “She is smart, tough, and America’s number one warrior, and she will do a great job as Attorney General!”
