Trump announces US support for 'food centers' in Gaza

President Trump announced on Monday that the United States plans to take a more active role in addressing the food crisis in Gaza, amid the ongoing humanitarian situation.

During a meeting with British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, Trump mentioned the establishment of a “food center” in Gaza. However, he didn’t clarify whether this would involve direct US involvement on the ground or if a third-party organization would step in to assist. He did indicate that this would be a collaborative effort with other nations.

“We’re going to do this with some very capable partners and will provide funding…and other countries are joining us,” Trump stated, expressing his assurance. “I know your country is on board. All the European nations are getting involved, and others are stepping forward to help as well. We’ve organized food centers where people can access support.”

In response to questions about the functioning of these food centers, Trump remarked, “It’s going to operate with support from the US. We’ll facilitate the food supply…ensuring there’s no barrier preventing access for people.”

Trump’s statements come in light of widespread protests regarding the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which has been severely impacted by the conflict with Hamas. Recent reports and images depict many individuals, including children, facing starvation as aid struggles to reach the territory.

“We’re going to secure substantial food supplies. We can save lives. Some of those kids—it’s true hunger. I’ve seen it. You can’t fabricate that,” Trump emphasized. “So, we’re committed to becoming even more involved.”

He also addressed whether Israel had enforced restrictions preventing aid from entering Gaza for several months, suggesting that more could be done to facilitate food access for Palestinians while expressing that he thinks Israel could “do a lot” to assist before diverting the conversation to other issues.

When asked earlier about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that there’s no hunger in Gaza, Trump noted, “Well, based on what I’ve seen on television, I wouldn’t say that’s accurate.”

He conveyed his deep concern about the unfolding situation in Gaza, which he labeled as “unbearable.”

“It’s heartbreaking to see images of starving children, especially,” he said. “And it’s clear that there’s a real sense of outrage among the British public.”
