Trump Appoints Prosecutor Who Took Action Against Sanctuary City Mayor Following Migrant Detention Chaos

Trump Administration Pushes to Keep Prosecutors Involved in Sanctuary Mayor Arrest

The Trump administration is working to retain federal prosecutors linked to the arrest of a sanctuary city mayor, as well as addressing accusations against Democrats stemming from incidents at an immigration detention center.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump appointed Alina Haba, a representative from New Jersey, to be confirmed by the Senate. The White House confirmed this, noting that Haba has previously represented Trump in various civil cases and was designated as the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey back in March. Trump praised Haba, stating she leads with diligence and aims to ensure a fair legal system for the people of New Jersey.

If the Senate confirms Haba, she will continue her role as the top prosecutor in the state. Recently, her office garnered national attention for its actions outside the New Jersey Immigration Detention Center, where tensions escalated involving several Democratic lawmakers.

In May, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested as he attempted to join a tour of the Delaney Hall detention facility with three Democratic members of Congress. Alongside New Jersey politicians Robert Menendez, Lamonica McQuiver, and Bonnie Watson Coleman, Baraka was denied access and confronted by an ICE agent.

Video evidence captured a heated exchange between Baraka and the agent. Subsequently, the Department of Homeland Security indicated that Democrats had failed to follow proper procedures and accused Baraka of attempting to force his way into the facility. Haba claimed that Baraka trespassed despite multiple warnings from officials.

“Newark Mayor Ras Baraka committed trespassing by ignoring various warnings and attempting to enter the ICE detention center today,” Haba stated. “He is now in custody. No one is above the law.”

Although the charges against Baraka were eventually dropped, McQuiver faced two counts of assault against an officer for her involvement in the situation. Prosecutors accused the group of obstructing law enforcement, which the Democrats claimed was an organized effort by lawmakers to disrupt the detention center’s operations under the guise of a Congressional oversight visit.

Baraka, who previously ran for governor, subsequently filed a lawsuit against Haba, alleging political persecution by the Trump administration. Additionally, in May, the Department of Justice initiated legal action against several New Jersey cities regarding sanctuary policies that purportedly hindered federal immigration enforcement efforts.
