Trump approves new law increasing penalties for fentanyl-related drugs

On Wednesday, President Trump enacted a law designed to combat illegal fentanyl trafficking by enhancing penalties for drug-related offenses.

During a ceremony at the White House, Trump emphasized the importance of the law by highlighting its aim to halt perilous human trafficking linked to fentanyl. He was joined by lawmakers and families affected by fentanyl overdoses.

The President described the legislation as “a historic step towards justice for families impacted by the fentanyl crisis,” referencing the newly signed Stop Fentanyl Act.

“We are determined to remove drug dealers and peddlers from our streets,” Trump stated. “We won’t stop until the overdose epidemic is resolved. It’s starting to improve a bit, but it’s still alarming.”

This bipartisan legislation, supported by both the House and Senate, permanently categorizes all fentanyl-related substances, including synthetic imitations, as Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act.

This designation empowers law enforcement to take more stringent actions against drug distribution and imposes robust penalties on individuals convicted of drug possession or sales.

The White House asserts that this law will deter cartels from developing new synthetic variants to evade the Controlled Substances Act.

Among those present at the bill signing were Greg Swan, who lost his son to a fentanyl overdose, and Anne Funder, who spoke about her son’s death related to fentanyl at last summer’s Republican National Convention.

Trump has consistently addressed the fentanyl influx in the U.S., often using it as a rationale for imposing tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.

He has expressed frustrations about both Mexico and Canada lacking adequate measures to prevent drug trafficking, noting that significantly more fentanyl crosses through the southern border than the northern.

Additionally, he has placed tariffs on China, criticizing the country for not doing enough to curb fentanyl production.

On Wednesday, Trump showcased his administration’s strategy for tackling drug cartels by officially designating them as foreign terrorist organizations.
