Trump Assassination Attempt Suspect Seeks Judge Recusal from Case

Lawyers for Ryan Wesley Routh, who was indicted in September on charges of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump, filed a motion asking U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon to recuse herself from the case because she was appointed by President Trump. Submitted.

“Mr. Trump is the current Republican presidential candidate in next month's election. During his campaign, he has praised Your Excellency's decision in the case numerous times,” the motion states.

“As the alleged victim here, he also has a significant stake in the outcome of this case,” the motion added. “If he were to become president in the future, he would have the power to nominate you to serve as a federal judge on the superior court where a vacancy occurs.”

Lawyers for the assassination suspect later expressed concern that if Trump were to become president again, he could appoint Judge Cannon “to fill vacancies on the highest courts of appeals, including the United States Supreme Court.”

As Breitbart News reported, Routh is accused of attempting to assassinate the 45th president on September 15 at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Officials said the 58-year-old man appeared to be hiding in the bushes and waiting for Trump, who was playing golf, to come into view.

The Secret Service agents apparently saw President Trump playing golf and were a hole or two ahead to secure the area, but then they spotted the barrel of Routh's gun and began firing. , the suspect fled.

An AK-47 style rifle with a scope, a backpack and a GoPro camera were found in the bushes where Routh was located, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

“This was an assassination attempt,” Routh reportedly wrote in a letter to a friend, and was arrested and later indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of attempting to assassinate the president.

The assassination attempt suspect has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
