Trump Attempts To Navigate Tensions Between Israel And Qatar Following ‘Regrettable’ Attack

Trump Issues Statement on Israel-Hamas Conflict

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump released a statement through a spokesperson, navigating the complicated relations between Israel and Qatar in light of the recent Hamas attack.

Israeli forces conducted airstrikes in Doha, Qatar’s capital, early that morning, targeting high-ranking Hamas leaders. During her press briefing, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt read Trump’s statement, which was later shared on a social media platform.

Trump’s statement indicated that the administration was informed by U.S. troops about Israel’s operation against Hamas in Doha. He clarified that this was not a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu, nor was it aligned with U.S. objectives.

“However, dismantling Hamas, which has inflicted suffering on the people of Gaza, is a significant goal. I did advise Qatar of the potential attack, but unfortunately, it came too late to prevent it,” Trump noted. He also mentioned discussions with Netanyahu after the airstrikes.

Trump expressed gratitude to Qatar’s leadership for their support, assuring them that such attacks wouldn’t be repeated. Qatar has served as a mediator between Israel and Hamas since October 2023, and its leaders condemned the recent airstrikes.

He also stated, “I have directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize the defense cooperation agreement with Qatar. I appreciate your attention to this matter,” Trump concluded.

Prime Minister Netanyahu later emphasized that the operation against Hamas’ leadership was an entirely Israeli initiative, asserting full responsibility for the actions taken.

Reports have surfaced, citing Israeli officials claiming that U.S. officials had granted permission for attacks within Qatar; however, U.S. representatives have disputed these claims, affirming that no such approval was given.

Leavitt conveyed to reporters that Trump was informed about the military action and had expressed his concerns to Netanyahu. The Prime Minister reportedly indicated a desire for peace in the near future. Leavitt articulated that Trump is hopeful that these “unfortunate incidents” could be catalysts for peace within the region.
