Trump Battling Against Established Officials Who Aim to Carry Out Inhumane Puppy Tests

Trump Administration’s Efforts on Animal Testing

President Donald Trump is taking steps to curb animal testing, which sounds a bit like something out of a fantasy, doesn’t it? However, just a few days after his election victory in 2024, I speculated that he would work to save taxpayers’ money and eliminate cruel testing practices on animals. Now, six months later, the Trump administration is indeed making strides toward making America safer for animals.

Recently, the white coat waste investigation revealed shocking details about the use of taxpayer dollars in animal testing, with reports indicating that the Pentagon was spending around $57 million on experiments involving wild dogs and cats. This was confirmed by various sources. The DOD had funded experiments that included embedding electrodes in cats, loud noise exposure, drug addiction in beagles, and invasive surgeries on dogs.

The decision to cancel certain contracts, including one related to these experiments, arrived shortly after pressures from advocacy groups led to a $10 million reduction in funding for other animal testing initiatives. There’s been significant attention on Hegseth’s highlighted criticism of these wasteful practices, and it’s clear that actions are being taken.

Meanwhile, other government agencies under Trump have also ended or banned animal testing that relies on taxpayer funds. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced plans to stop animal testing and promote the adoption of retired lab animals. This initiative is popular and was organized during Trump’s first term. In contrast, the current administration under Biden has rolled back some of these protections.

Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs is reportedly on track to halt primate testing, continuing the efforts to end various animal experiments initiated during Trump’s administration.

As for the Department of Health and Human Services, there’s a push for a roadmap that outlines a gradual phase-out of animal testing, particularly on primates. This is part of a broader strategy that includes significant budget cuts to agencies like the NIH, which is known for funding a large amount of animal testing. Trump’s proposed budget for 2026 looks to slash NIH funding by 40% in light of various controversies that have emerged.

During a recent cabinet meeting, support was expressed for reducing animal testing across multiple agencies, reinforcing a commitment to the issue.

Nevertheless, there are still significant concerns regarding waste and continued funding for animal experiments under the previous administrations. Reports have surfaced indicating ongoing costly experiments, which stand in stark contrast to the proposed cuts and changes in policy.

House Republicans are beginning to challenge the NIH on its continued funding of these projects, with some proposing legislation aimed at curbing cruel animal testing. The bipartisan initiative, introduced by Representative Nancy Mace, aims to limit painful experiments involving pets.

There’s much more to be done, but the Trump administration’s advocacy for animals is noteworthy, marking a significant step towards reducing wasteful spending and alleviating animal suffering.
