Trump Comments on Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
Former President Donald Trump expressed his belief regarding the reasoning behind Russia’s invasion of Ukraine during President Biden’s administration. He emphasized that if he were still in office, the situation would likely have been different.
After a significant meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump addressed the media, reiterating his long-held view that the invasion would not have occurred under his leadership. He stated that Putin confirmed this sentiment during their discussions.
Speaking with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump articulated his thoughts about the invasion, suggesting it stemmed from incompetence on Biden’s part. He pointed out the issues with mail-in voting, claiming that Putin noted it as a factor in the election’s legitimacy.
Trump reflected on Putin’s remarks, stating, “He said your election was equipped because you have mail-in votes.” He further alleged that this was indicative of a lack of fair elections in the U.S. and seemed to imply that Putin would not have acted as he did if Trump had still been president.
He described the past year as particularly telling, as it showcased significant changes in the U.S. since he left office. “A year ago he thought the country was in dire straits,” Trump mentioned.
Moreover, Trump labeled the 2020 presidential election as a “tragedy” and expressed concern about the implications of U.S.-Russia relations under Biden, stating it has led to a stronger alliance between those nations.
To counter this growing relationship, Trump hinted at the potential for U.S.-Russia collaboration, especially regarding economic exchanges that may involve resources like rare earth minerals.
While evaluating the meeting outcomes, Trump mentioned there were key points that Russia and Ukraine might agree upon, alluding to possible negotiations around territorial adjustments. He suggested that moving forward positively rests heavily on Ukraine’s President Zelensky’s actions.
