Trump Predicts Schumer’s Retirement Amid Government Shutdown

President Donald Trump has expressed his belief that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will likely retire because he doesn’t feel confident about winning his primary. This comment emerged during a back-and-forth between Trump, Schumer, and other Democratic leaders, such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, as a partial government shutdown extends into its ninth day.

Trump accused Schumer and Jeffries of “holding the entire federal government hostage.” He pointed out, however, that figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, just before the shutdown, mentioned that Republicans were welcome to come and negotiate at any time.

Trump remarked, “She’s replacing Hakeem Jeffries, and Schumer fears she’s going to run against him. Life is unpredictable, right? But as it stands, I don’t think he can win against anyone. He might retire rather than face a primary loss.” He added that Schumer is facing poor polling numbers, which, in his view, suggests retirement is on the table.

These comments came after a report from Axios in September mentioned Ocasio-Cortez making preparations to potentially run for the Senate or even the presidency in 2028.

Schumer’s office didn’t provide any comments in response to inquiries. Meanwhile, a conflict has arisen between the White House and Congressional Democrats regarding funding disputes that led to the government shutdown. While Republicans argue that Democrats initiated the shutdown due to their refusal to back a stopgap funding bill, Democrats are blaming the Republicans, who hold majorities in both the House and Senate.

Schumer has received criticism from the White House after stating that each day of the shutdown appears to be improving for Democrats. He mentioned, “Every day is getting better for us,” which drew ire from Trump, who countered that such remarks indicate Schumer is prioritizing his party’s interests over those of the American people.

Trump stated, “This is a confession that he is acting not to serve the people, but to serve his party’s partisan interests.”
