Former Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that it was “unacceptable” for former President Donald Trump to refer to jailed January 6 rioters as hostages.
President Trump said at a rally in Ohio on Saturday. That is why they are hostages. They’ve been treated horribly and very unfairly, and you know that, and everyone knows that. And we’re going to work on that right away. On our first day in office, we will work with our people to save our country and treat our incredible patriots. And they were incredible patriots. ”
“I think it’s very unfortunate that there are American hostages being held in Gaza,” Pence said. “For the president and other leaders to refer to people who are going through our justice system as hostages. . And that is never acceptable.”
He added: “I think the assault on the police officer was a tragic circumstance that ultimately took a life. And I’m not going to diminish that in any way.”
Anchor Margaret Brennan said, “What do you think about Mr. Trump and whether the public needs to hear or see some evidence regarding the federal charges related to his alleged role on January 6th?” “I wonder,” Brennan said. “Do you think it needs to happen before Election Day?”
“At the end of the day, I think the American people know what happened that day,” Pence said. “And I say the people who ransacked the Capitol need to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. And I believe they are. But I think it will be up to the American people to judge the president’s efforts that day.”
