Trump Calls for a Ceasefire While Israel Maintains Its Position in Lebanon

Trump Calls for Peace in the Middle East

President Donald Trump reiterated his appeal for peace in the Middle East on Thursday, urging all parties involved to keep channels of negotiation open as Israel looks to strengthen its military presence in southern Lebanon.

He stated, “The United States is committed to peace, and we encourage everyone in the region to ensure that negotiations proceed smoothly.” In a post on social media, he expressed anticipation for a full ceasefire across various fronts, including Lebanon and between Hezbollah and Israel.

He also highlighted how rising markets and decreasing oil prices are indicators that investors back diplomatic initiatives in the area. “The market is optimistic with lower oil prices, and stock prices are climbing,” Trump mentioned.

His remarks came shortly after a new agreement was reached between the United States, Israel, and Iran, aimed at reducing hostilities throughout the region. This deal emphasizes stopping fighting on all fronts and respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Nevertheless, Israel has signaled its plans to continue, and possibly expand, its military operations in southern Lebanon.

On Thursday, the Israeli army unveiled a revised map illustrating an expanded control area in southern Lebanon. The updated details indicate that Israeli forces have moved several kilometers deeper into Lebanese territory, including regions close to Hezbollah’s stronghold in Nabatiyeh, situated north of the Litani River.

Israeli officials disclosed to reporters that discussions with U.S. officials about the Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon are ongoing. A senior adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the talks as “robust.”

Israel has not retreated from southern Lebanon; it has rebuffed international calls to withdraw its troops following the invasion in March, which aimed to curb Hezbollah’s rocket fire. The consequences of the conflict have been severe, leading to thousands of deaths, the destruction of villages, and large-scale displacement of civilians.

The fighting persists. This week, Hezbollah escalated its offensive by employing explosive drones against Israeli forces inside Lebanon. These casualties come at a particularly challenging moment, overshadowing current diplomatic efforts to establish a ceasefire.
