Trump Proposes Renaming New Mexico to New America
Former President Donald Trump is once again putting forth the idea of renaming New Mexico, suggesting it be changed to “New America.” He believes that such a shift could enhance various aspects of life in the state, from increasing home values to fostering a stronger sense of pride among residents.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” He continued, asserting that this name change would bring “great value and prestige” to the state, claiming it would lead to rising home values and incomes. He even suggested that people would feel prouder when they salute the American flag.
Interestingly, he didn’t hesitate to take a jab at New Mexico’s electoral processes, adding, “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” However, it’s worth noting that Trump did not provide any evidence for his claims regarding elections or explain how a name change could influence property and income levels.
This idea isn’t completely new for Trump. He had floated a similar proposition last month, sharing a map that crossed out “Mexico” and replaced it with “America.” The White House had even shared this post on its official social media account.
During his remarks at the RNC Midterm Convention back in September, Trump reaffirmed his views, saying, “You have a neighboring state, New Mexico. We think it should be called New America,” asserting that the idea has gained popularity among people. He added a somewhat vague remark, noting, “I don’t know about the radical left. I’m sure it doesn’t like it, but the people love it.”
New Mexico’s Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, responded rather firmly, emphasizing that the state’s name has historical significance and asserting, “it’s been ours since before the United States existed.” She accused the White House of diverting attention from important issues, saying that while they focus on name changes, her administration is occupied with essential matters like child care, education, and health care.
Trump’s recent comments do not detail any formal steps for enacting a name change. It is important to note that New Mexico’s name is entrenched in its constitution, which plainly states, “The name of this state is New Mexico.”
This proposal comes on the heels of Trump’s previous attempts at renaming geographical locations, like his push to call Lake Ontario “Lake America,” as well as the Gulf of Mexico being referred to as the “Gulf of America.”
