Trump calls Obama’s presidential library a ‘disaster’ and offers assistance with its construction.

President Donald Trump recently expressed a willingness to assist in the development of the Obama Presidential Center, which is currently facing significant delays and cost overruns. This project has gained attention due to its focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

Throughout his career, Trump has reshaped city skylines with his buildings, and he linked the ongoing issues of the Chicago project to its management. “President Obama, if he wants help, I’m a really good builder, and I finish projects on time and within budget. So I’m going to help him. He’s building a library in Chicago, and it’s a disaster,” Trump commented during an event at the White House with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Kearney.

The Obama Library, initially launched with ambitious DEI objectives, is now entangled in a complicated $40 million lawsuit and has seen escalating expenses. Trump also touched on the Biden administration’s Chips Act, designed to enhance domestic semiconductor production, before mentioning the challenges the Obama Presidential Center faces.

“[Obama] said he only wanted Day, just wanting to get through,” Trump said. “But look where we are—massive cost overruns, work halted. It’s problematic, and I don’t like to see this because it negatively impacts the president. His library situation is just a mess.”

The center, which is being constructed on a 19.3-acre site, is set to feature a 225-foot-high museum, a digital library, and various recreational facilities, including gymnasiums and a standard-sized NBA court. From the outset, the project aimed to meet “ambitious goals” regarding construction diversity, mandating that 35% of contracts were to be allocated to minority-owned businesses.

A recent lawsuit by a minority contractor against the project’s structural engineers has spotlighted the DEI aspect, as the engineers alleged that minority contractors lacked the requisite experience, leading to project delays.

Trump criticized Obama for focusing on political correctness over merit, saying, “He wanted to be politically right, so he didn’t hire tough, experienced builders.” He continued, “It’s chaos—over budget, and frankly, it hasn’t been executed professionally.”

Emily Bitner, vice president of communications for the Obama Foundation, refuted Trump’s claims, stating they were inaccurate and that the center was not implicated in any lawsuit. The center is projected to open in 2026, although it was initially expected to open in 2021. “Anyone who visits will be amazed by its beauty and potential to energize Chicago’s economy,” Bitner stated, emphasizing the center’s mission to inspire future leaders.

She also noted the ongoing work at the site, mentioning the hundreds of workers present daily and asserting that the project is funded privately, not by taxpayers. Unlike traditional presidential libraries, the center’s facilities will focus on digital collections.

Currently, Obama’s presidential library is located in Hoffman Estate, Chicago, but will relocate to College Park, Maryland later this year.
