President Trump, on Monday, urged pharmaceutical companies to “justify” their claims about the effectiveness of COVID-19 treatments amid ongoing debates in his administration surrounding vaccines and health policies.
“It’s crucial for drugmakers to clarify the success of various COVID drugs. Some believe these treatments are miraculous, saving countless lives, while others are skeptical!” he posted on social media.
“I want answers now since the CDC is currently facing a lot of scrutiny over this issue,” he added, referencing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Last week, Trump dismissed the CDC director amidst tensions between the agency and Health and Human Services Department’s Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding vaccine efficacy.
“I’ve received some remarkable information from Pfizer and others, but it doesn’t seem like they’re sharing those findings publicly. Why is that?” Trump remarked on Monday. “Everyone, including Kennedy and the CDC, seems entangled in this ongoing struggle over the pharmaceutical industry’s successes or shortcomings.”
Additionally, on Monday, the former CDC director responded to Kennedy, known for his vaccine skepticism, criticizing his management at the agency and the current director, Susan Monares.
In a New York Times opinion piece, nine former directors of the CDC voiced concerns about changes made under Kennedy’s leadership.
On Thursday, Demetre Daskalakis, a previous leader at the CDC’s National Center for Vaccination and Respiratory Diseases, stated that Kennedy received inadequate explanations from experts regarding measles, COVID-19, and influenza.
“No one from my center has ever provided him with detailed information on these topics,” Daskalakis told CNN.
“Maybe he trusts different experts more than the CDC professionals, who are regarded as top scientists globally,” he added.
Trump emphasized on social media the accelerated timeline for vaccine development and distribution during the pandemic, stating, “The drugmakers have presented impressive data and results, but it seems they’re not sharing this information widely.”
“I want them to present their findings to the CDC and the public as soon as possible and address this confusion! I sincerely hope the operational speed is as impressive as many claim. If not, shouldn’t we be concerned?” he concluded.
Efforts to reach out to Pfizer for comments were made.
