Trump Administration’s Efforts in Syria
The administration under Trump has actively sought to stabilize Syria after it was significantly impacted by Islamic terrorist groups in December 2024.
Recent actions include the removal of sanctions and, notably, the lifting of a bounty placed on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who has connections to al-Qaeda and is also known as Mohammed al-Jawlani. Additionally, the Syria Sanctions Program was terminated, and on July 8, sanctions against al-Sharaa’s group, the Al-Nusra Front and HTS, were revoked. Furthermore, humanitarian aid has been dispatched to various regions within the war-torn country.
However, recent airstrikes by Israel in southern Syria have sparked worries among key figures in the administration, including the president, about the ongoing peace in the area.
“We’re trying to tell Bibi to stop this,” the president expressed, as he has reiterated support for al-Sharaa and hinted at the need for Israel to reduce its interference.
“The results of our approach in Syria are encouraging,” he stated. “We’re fully committed to helping the Syrian government succeed in its goal of creating a prosperous nation.”
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful and productive dialogue between Syria and Israel for the benefit of both nations. “It’s crucial that nothing obstructs Syria’s development,” he added.
Reports indicated that U.S. officials have expressed concern over the frequency of attacks from Israel within Syria, stating that they undermine the potential for security agreements between the two nations.
In a recent operation led by the Israeli army, 13 individuals were reportedly killed, with numerous others injured and several arrested. The operation aimed to apprehend members of the Jamaa Islamiyah terrorist group, but Syrian officials have condemned these actions as violations of human rights, specifically labeling them as “war crimes.”
In response to the violence, a local official remarked, “We are peaceful farmers, and we have a right to protect ourselves. We did not provoke these actions.”
U.S. officials conveyed that Israel’s lack of communication with the White House regarding these military operations was troubling.
“We’re urging Bibi to reconsider his tactics or risk alienating a valuable diplomatic opportunity,” one official mentioned, highlighting potential consequences for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a statement defending the Israeli military’s actions, Netanyahu praised the soldiers involved and reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its borders against perceived threats.
Moving forward, Netanyahu advocated for the establishment of a demilitarized buffer zone, asserting that these measures were essential for the security of the Israeli populace and eventual agreements with Syria could be achievable with goodwill.
