Trump and CBS Reach Settlement Over Controversial Interview
In a recent development, CBS and its parent company, Paramount, have agreed to pay an additional $20 million to President Donald Trump’s Presidential Library. This comes after a previous payment of $16 million as part of a settlement linked to a contentious interview involving former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, stating, “Breaking the news! We just achieved a major significant victory in a historic litigation over 60 Minutes. CBS and Paramount knew they had scam Americans and were eager to settle,”
The lawsuit originated from a 60 Minutes interview with Harris that aired on October 7, 2024. Trump’s team contended that the editing of the interview was manipulated to portray Harris in a more favorable light, akin to what they claim is election interference.
In his post, Trump remarked, “Paramount/CBS/60 Minutes paid a $16 million settlement today. We also expect to receive $20 million, totaling over $36 million. This is another victory over fake news media, and we will explain their widespread fraud and deception,”
He criticized mainstream media, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and CNN, stating that “the era when they were allowed to deceive the American people is over. Make America great again!”
Initially, Paramount’s settlement of $16 million was linked to claims of “intentional deception” in Harris’ responses regarding the Israeli conflict. Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Kerr had begun an investigation into the matter, leading to the release of a full version of the interview, which was nearly twice as long as what had been originally aired.
In the original broadcast, Harris addressed whether U.S. actions were influencing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisions. However, in an unbroadcasted clip, she stated, “The work we did has brought about a lot of movement in the area by Israel and encouraged us to do a lot of things, including our advocacy about what needs to happen in that area.”
Despite CBS’s claims that the editing was standard procedure, Trump’s lawsuit asserts that editing decisions were not merely routine but distorted the narrative, leading to misleading representations of the facts.
