Trump’s Nuclear Deal with Saudi Arabia Conditional on Abraham Accords

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that any civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia would depend on the country joining the Abraham Accords.

In a post on social media, he stated, “The civil nuclear agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy and Saudi Arabia (no material enrichment!) is focused solely on non-military applications, similar to existing agreements with Iran and the UAE, and will move forward, but it’s entirely contingent upon Saudi Arabia joining the highly regarded and successful Abraham Accords.”

He added, “The United States is not against civil (non-enriched) nuclear facilities. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President Donald J. Trump,” wrapping up with that note.

Back in May, the president had urged additional Middle Eastern nations to consider joining the Abraham Accords, which were first established during his initial term.

According to reports, as discussions regarding a deal with Iran continue, Trump’s remarks emphasize the significance of this coalition.

The initial members of the Abraham Accords, the UAE and Bahrain, entered into the agreement in 2020. This framework is designed to normalize relations between Israel and the Arab states that are part of the alliance, which also includes Morocco, Sudan, and Kazakhstan.

Trump has specifically called on Saudi Arabia and Qatar to take the lead by signing onto the Abraham Accords, warning that failure to do so could exclude them from any future peace agreement with Iran.

At the G7 meeting in June, he expressed optimism about more Arab countries joining the agreement, referring to the initial signatories as “very smart countries” and noting that none had withdrawn from the pact while being involved in conflicts with Iran.

In parallel, a report from Breitbart News mentioned on Wednesday that multiple sources suggested the Trump administration was in various stages of approving a nuclear technology-sharing agreement with Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi news agency Al Arabiya echoed these claims from U.S. media, with the Wall Street Journal stating that Trump had formally approved the nuclear deal and that his administration intended to seek Congressional backing for it. However, the White House and the Saudi government had not commented on this at the time of publication.
