Trump claims he feels secure after shots during Correspondents' Dinner

Chaos at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

On Saturday night, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a swift exit from the Washington Hilton ballroom as gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

During the unsettling moments, Trump was quickly escorted to safety. He later shared on Truth Social that he, Melania, and members of his Cabinet were unharmed.

Interestingly, the Washington Hilton has a troubling history; it was the site of an attempted assassination on President Ronald Reagan back in March 1981. It’s quite striking to think that a similar level of chaos unfolded again just yards away, and, well, it’s still not clear if Trump was actually the target of this recent disturbance.

In the past, John Hinckley Jr. shot at Reagan after a speech, injuring him when a bullet ricocheted off the presidential vehicle and struck his chest. Secret Service agents hurried Reagan into a car, taking him to George Washington University Hospital, where he managed to keep a positive demeanor throughout treatment.

Three others were also impacted during the recent shooting, including press secretary James Brady, a police officer, and a Secret Service agent.

Brady suffered from a gunshot wound to the eye, leading to brain damage. Tragically, he died in 2014, with his death later classified as a homicide linked to the 1981 incident.

Since that time, locals have taken to referring to the hotel as the “Hinckley Hilton,” a phrase that somehow encapsulates the memory of that terrible day.

Meanwhile, Hinckley himself was acquitted of attempted assassination after using an insanity defense, claiming his actions were inspired by a fascination with the movie “Taxi Driver” and actress Jodie Foster.

As of now, President Trump is anticipated to head back to the White House for a briefing and provide a statement regarding the incidents of the evening.
