Trump Claims Interest Rates Need to Be 1% or Below Following Fed's Increase

Trump Advocates for Lower Interest Rates Following Fed Hike

President Donald Trump expressed his belief that interest rates should be at one percent or lower after the Federal Reserve raised rates by a quarter of a percent on Wednesday.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged for rapid reductions in interest rates.

He stated, “Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less, because we are the Best Credit in the World — BY FAR. Our Country is BOOMING with new Investment! If we stopped Trading with every country that we have a Deficit with, which is most of them, we would make, at least, 1.5 Trillion Dollars a year.”

Furthermore, Trump added, “The word ‘Deficit’ is nothing more than a fancy word for LOSS. We are ‘carrying’ almost every country in the World, and that cannot go on any longer. LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!”

Currently, the federal funds rate ranges from 3.75 percent to four percent following this adjustment, which marks the first increase since 2023. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, who assumed the role in May, noted that the hike coincides with signs of economic strengthening.

According to Economic and Finance Editor John Carney from Breitbart News:

This increase indicates a shift from the Fed’s earlier rate cuts in late 2024 and 2025, which were prompted by worries about a slowing economy and weakening labor market. The recent hike suggests that Fed officials are more confident in the economy’s resilience and are prioritizing the persistent inflation as a significant concern.

The Fed’s statement concluded the two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting, highlighting, “Economic activity is expanding at a solid pace. While uncertainty remains elevated due to geopolitical developments, domestic spending has shown resilience. Productivity growth is strong, and capital investment remains robust. Job gains have matched the workforce, and the unemployment rate has seen little change. Inflation continues to be high, and today’s policy action will facilitate a quicker return to the Committee’s 2 percent target.”

Trump has consistently called for the Fed to lower interest rates and once referred to former chairman Jerome Powell as “too late” for not implementing cuts swiftly enough in Trump’s view.
