Trump’s New Stance on Iranian Nuclear Deal
On Monday evening, President Donald Trump announced that his administration’s new deal with Iran would not permit uranium enrichment. This statement seems to clash with earlier reports that suggested otherwise.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. would prohibit uranium enrichment, contrary to a report by Axios indicating that the administration might allow limited enrichment in discussions. Iran has insisted that any transactions regarding nuclear programs should include a minimum of 3% uranium enrichment provisions.
In his post, Trump remarked, “Auto-pen should have stopped being ‘rich’ long ago. Under our potential agreement – we will not allow uranium enrichment!”
Unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations mentioned that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkov had proposed a contract to Iranian officials over the weekend, which reportedly included terms that would permit private-grade enrichment, but only under specific monitoring conditions from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Before Axios reported on this, Trump administration officials had stated that any enrichment would be a key condition for agreements with Iran.
Recent IAEA reports indicate that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium has grown to 408.6 kg, dangerously close to the approximate 90% enrichment level needed for weapons. Moreover, Iran could potentially produce nuclear weapons in as little as three weeks using its existing stock of weapon-grade uranium.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), established during the Obama administration, aimed to curb Iran’s nuclear pursuits by limiting enrichment activities to civilian needs and subjecting them to IAEA oversight. However, it has faced significant criticism from conservatives who argue it is too lenient, particularly because of its Sunset clause.
Some observers are drawing parallels between the JCPOA and the proposals purportedly under consideration by certain members of the Trump administration.
The White House has yet to provide a comment in response to inquiries regarding this matter.
