Trump’s Comments on Obama and Supreme Court Ruling
In a recent statement, President Trump expressed that former President Barack Obama is “putting a huge burden on me” due to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that grants immunity for presidential actions.
This comes after Trump criticized Obama harshly, accusing him of treason for requesting a spy agency report on Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election.
“It probably helps him a lot—this immunity ruling—but it doesn’t help the people around him at all,” Trump remarked.
“I mean, he committed a criminal act, there’s no doubt about that, yet he has this immunity.” As he departed the White House for a trip to Scotland, he added, “Obama owes me a lot.”
Earlier in the week, Trump had labeled Obama a “gang leader” for government employees, suggesting that he instigated the investigation into whether Trump conspired with Russia to undermine Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
This investigation has been seen as a lengthy and draining process that overshadowed much of Trump’s early presidency.
Last week, National Intelligence Director Tarshi Gabbard referred the possibility of Obama breaking the law to Attorney General Pam Bondy.
An email released by Gabbard indicated that Obama had ordered an intelligence report looking into Russia’s influence on the election.
Following a White House meeting in December 2016, James Clapper, then-director of national intelligence, contacted agency leaders regarding the tools and actions Russia allegedly used to interfere in the election.
“It’s a criminal act at the highest level,” Trump stated.
“President Obama initiated it. [Joe] Biden was involved, as was [then-FBI Director James] Comey and [then-CIA Director John] Brennan. This suggests Obama was instigating and leading the coup alongside Hillary Clinton and others.”
Obama responded to Trump’s claims by emphasizing the importance of respecting the presidency. “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous,” he remarked, calling them weak distractions from the facts that Russia did indeed attempt to influence the election but did not manipulate voting outcomes.
Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that a former president operates under absolute or presumed immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken while in office.
This ruling was significant as Trump, who faced criminal charges for his actions following the 2020 election, is currently navigating multiple legal challenges, including investigations into classified documents and alleged payments made during the 2016 campaign that relate to the election integrity in Georgia.
