Trump claims Schumer 'erred' as some Democrats distance themselves from him

Trump Critiques Schumer as Democrats Call for Leadership Change

In a recent interview on “The Ingraham Angle,” President Donald Trump expressed that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has exceeded acceptable boundaries, especially as some Democrats are suggesting he should be replaced.

“I think he made the mistake of going too far,” Trump shared with host Laura Ingraham. “He believed he could defeat the Republicans, but instead, the Republicans ended up defeating him.”

Senators Break with Party to Support Spending Plan

On Sunday, eight senators diverged from their party’s stance, voting in favor of a House-passed spending proposal aimed at reopening the government, which their Democratic colleagues had blocked multiple times. A Senate vote of 60-40 on Monday permitted the shutdown to be lifted, with a decisive vote in the House anticipated later this week.

Among the discontented Democrats is Congressman Ro Khanna of California, who, along with others, is advocating for Schumer’s dismissal. Trump remarked, “I’ve never seen a politician change like this.”

“I feel for Chuck Schumer,” Trump added. “I’ve known him since he was a strong supporter of Israel, but he seems to have shifted dramatically.”

Government Shutdown Context

The recent government shutdown, being the longest in history, centered around a debate in Congress regarding the extension of Obamacare subsidies. The repercussions were extensive, affecting thousands of furloughed workers and even causing flight cancellations across the U.S.

Trump accused Democrats of prioritizing a desire to extend financial aid to certain groups, stating, “What they really wanted was to give $1.5 trillion to illegal immigrants and individuals involved in crime.” He argued that the aim was to ensure proper medical care access for these populations.

Concerns Over Health Care Costs

Trump claimed that funding medical care for illegal immigrants could negatively impact the healthcare of others. He criticized Obamacare, labeling it as “horrible” and excessively costly, mentioning that “insurance premiums have soared” over the years.

Instead, he proposed that policyholders should be given the opportunity to act like entrepreneurs. “Instead of sending that money to insurance companies, I want it to go into accounts where people can buy their own health insurance. They should be able to negotiate their own insurance,” he articulated.

Preventing Future Shutdowns

When Ingraham questioned Trump on how Republicans could avert another government shutdown on January 30, 2026, when current funding expires, he hinted at plans for new legislation. “We’re aiming to introduce a bill that prevents that from happening again,” Trump indicated. “We can’t simply shut down the government while trying to renegotiate an absent deal.”
