Trump Criticizes Schumer Over IndyCar Race Plans

WASHINGTON – On Friday, President Trump expressed frustration towards Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, claiming he’s hindering efforts to organize an IndyCar race in Washington, D.C. The event is intended to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is advocating for the race to take place around the National Mall in August. Trump sees this as an opportunity to highlight American sporting events in an unconventional way.

“You can’t get Mr. Schumer, and Mr. Schumer is making it very difficult,” Trump remarked during a conversation in the Oval Office.

The president questioned Schumer’s motives: “What’s wrong with him? Everybody wants to do that. Mr. Schumer doesn’t want to see ads near the Capitol,” he stated, adding, “Cars have advertisements. Without them, they don’t look as good. That’s the only reason.”

Organizing the race would necessitate parliamentary approval because advertising is banned on the grounds of Parliament House.

A spokesperson for Schumer noted that the senator hasn’t taken a stance on the proposal and is still reviewing the details.

The Department of Transportation emphasized the potential benefits, stating, “The Grand Prix is an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate our nation’s proud sporting heritage, showcase the beauty of the National Mall, and generate millions in tourism revenue.”

They added that they are collaborating with Congress to clarify the positive impacts the race could have.

Trump, while examining plans for a UFC fight set for June 14 on the White House’s South Lawn—also celebrating his 80th birthday—expressed disappointment about Schumer’s influence. He sees the UFC event as one of the marquee celebrations for the anniversary.

Plans for the fight include a combat “octagon” flanked by two tall arch lights, about the height of the White House itself. Approximately 6,000 guests will be accommodated on the lawn, with additional seating for up to 100,000 more on large screens positioned on the Ellipse.

“I’ve never been involved in anything where so many people wanted tickets,” Trump commented.

The president noted that UFC CEO Dana White “will give a great fight,” mentioning the anticipation of championship bouts. “I love it. I think it’s great. They’re tough,” he remarked.

While enthusiastic about the events, Trump mentioned he doesn’t plan to take on a significant role in the programming itself, quipping, “I’m just a landlord.”
